Choosing a natural diamond engagement ring with a GIA report can start with three checks: understand the stone, review its report, and find a comfortable design. These simple steps make it easier to compare your options.
What does a GIA report mean?
GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, examines and grades diamonds. Natural diamonds form in nature. A GIA natural diamond report records the characteristics of the stone that was examined.
Although people sometimes call it a “GIA certificate,” the official document is a grading report. GIA does not provide a resale price or appraisal value in that report.
Understand the 4Cs
- Carat: the diamond’s weight.
- Color: the assessment of its color.
- Clarity: characteristics within the stone and on its surface.
- Cut: the quality of the cutting that affects how the diamond handles light.
GIA assigns an overall cut grade to standard round brilliant diamonds in the D–Z color range. Keep the diamond’s shape in mind when reading its grading information.
Check the GIA report number
Enter the report number in GIA Report Check to compare its information with GIA’s records. Ask your jeweler to explain how the report matches the stone you are considering. If the diamond has a laser inscription, that number can also be compared.
Choose a comfortable ring
Once you understand the report, consider the diamond’s shape, setting design, ring size, and your budget. Try a few styles and view the diamond in person to find a ring that suits your taste and daily activities.
